Given the success of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling Twilight, both in print and on screen, it's no surprise that big names stars have attached their names to this latest project.
Academy Award-nominee Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass, About a Boy,) has agreed to direct, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon is currently being filmed in Vancouver, BC, and Tuscany, Italy – home of the dreaded Volturi vampire coven, who rule the world and preside over all matters relating to the beautiful, sparkling undead.
The Volturi
While the Twilight movie brought us many newcomers, New Moon features quite a few familiar faces. Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) plays Aro, the Volturi's undisputed leader, with Jamie Campbell Bower (Sweeney Todd) by his side as Caius, and Christopher Heyerdahl (Blade: Trinity) as Marcus. Daniel Cudmore (X-Men) is Volturi Guard Felix; Charlie Bewley is Demetri, the Volturi's own Tracker; and Dakota Fanning (Coraline) joins the cast as Jane – the Volturi's secret weapon, whose very special abilities wreak havoc on everyone's pain receptors – save for Bella's.
The Cullens Family
Kristen Stewart reprises her role as Isabella "Bella" Swan with Robert Pattinson at her side as the handsome Edward Cullen. Peter Facinelli and Elizabeth Reaser return as Dr. Carlisle Cullen and Esme, Edward's loving adoptive parents.
Kellan Lutz and Nikki Reed are back as Emmett and Rosalie, joined once again by Ashley Greene as the whimsical Alice and Jackson Rathbone as Jasper Hale – the newest "vegetarian" of the bunch, who savagely attacks Bella when she gets a bloody cut during her eighteenth birthday party.
Mayhem ensues, and the Cullens clan deems it best for all involved to remove themselves from Forks, Washington, and from Bella's life altogether. In a heart wrenching moment, Edward says goodbye to Bella:
"I promise that this will be the last time you'll see me. I won't come back (…) It will be as if I'd never existed." Stephenie Meyer's New Moon.
Thus begins the darkest period of Bella's life – the "new moon" referred to in the title. Her dreams of happily-ever-after shattered, she is thrown into a deep depression where her blossoming friendship with childhood friend Jacob Black seems to be the only salvation.
The Quileute Wolves
Bella grows increasingly close to Jacob, who is quickly turning into a man as his own destiny is revealed. Whereas Bella's life is tied to Edward Cullen and the rest of the Forks vampires, Jacob's own heritage ties him to the vampires' mortal enemies: the werewolves of Quileute legends.
Taylor Lautner is back as top dog Jacob Black, and new actors have joined the cast as members of the Quileute Indian Nation. Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier, and Kiowa Gordon now form Jacob's pack, with the handsome Chaske Spencer as Sam Uley, their Alpha Dog – leader of the pack who will do everything in their power to protect the increasingly reckless Bella from herself, and from her enemies.
New Moon is scheduled to be released in theatres November 20, 2009.
